Commitment 2: Ensure Effective Teaching in Every Classroom

Phase 1
  • Provide training to teachers in classroom instruction and classroom-management strategies.

  • Ask volunteer vanguard teachers to engage in action research and/or survey the teachers regarding the instruction and management strategies.

  • Use the findings from the action research and/or survey to identify instruction and management strategies that are to be the "language of" or "model of" instruction in the school or district.

  • Rephrase the instruction and management strategies in "question" format to be used for unit design.

Phase 2

  • Use the unit design questions as the basis for peer and self-analysis of teaching.

  • Use the unit design questions as the basis for administrator "walkthroughs."

  • Have teachers meet periodically to discuss their observations and reflections regarding their use of the strategies embedded in the unit design questions.

Phase 3

  • Use the unit design questions as the basis for a merit pay system.

  • Use the unit design questions as the basis for a "value added" approach to teacher evaluation.
