Commitment 3: Build Background Knowledge for All Students

Phase 1
  • Identify 30 mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies terms for each grade level in grades K-8 or grades 1-8. High schools may wish to identify critical terms for entering freshmen or for students who appear to be lacking in basic subject matter knowledge.

  • Have teacher leaders experiment with the six-step instructional process and student notebooks, collecting formal or informal data.

Phase 2

  • Based on feedback from teacher leaders, design a protocol for the scheduling of vocabulary instruction and the six-step process.

  • Implement the vocabulary program districtwide.
