Featuring Dr. Robert J. Marzano and Dr. Debra Pickering
Interactive whiteboards, learner response systems (clickers), and the Internet are examples of technology that are influencing classrooms around the world. These technologies provide us with powerful tools to deliver effective instruction. However, having these tools in the classroom is not sufficient; they must be used artfully. They must be used to enhance the effectiveness of instructional strategies that have a high probability of positively influencing student learning. In fact, these technologies may be the key to unlocking the potential of strategies that we know can significantly improve student learning.
Building on Dr. Marzano's book The Art and Science of Teaching, Dr. Marzano and Dr. Pickering guide participants to increase their understanding of how to use interactive whiteboards, learner response systems, and the Internet to enhance--not replace--their use of research-based instructional strategies. The interactive two days will include recommendations, demonstrations, and opportunities for practice. More specifically, participants will understand how to:
- Help students focus on learning goals more so than on the classroom activities.
- Provide students with feedback about their own learning AND provide teachers with instructional feedback to guide the design of learning experiences.
- Present new knowledge to students in a way that can improve engagement, retention, understanding, and the ability to transfer knowledge.
- Guide students to deeper levels of understanding and higher levels of competency.
- Develop tasks that engage students in meaningful use of knowledge.
- Engage students--and maintain engagement.
- Manage a classroom that uses the technologies.

Promethean and Marzano Research Laboratory have partnered to study the influence of interactive whiteboards in the classroom. During the 2008-2009 school year, 79 teachers from 50 schools throughout the country participated in independent studies to determine the effect Promethean ActivClassroom has on student achievement in the classroom.
