Aurora Hymel
Senior Education Improvement Specialist

Hi there! My name is Aurora Hymel, and I am a senior education improvement specialist at Marzano Research. Twenty years ago, I received a Master of Arts in teaching from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and have been working since to provide students access to rigorous academic programs with real-world application. I have been a teacher in Mexico, Colombia, and Texas. I have served as a school-based administrator and principal in Houston and San Antonio and as a central office leader in Houston, Texas, and Portland, Oregon. I hold a Doctorate of Education from the University of Houston in professional leadership and a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Trinity University.

My primary areas of expertise are career and technical education (CTE), college and career readiness, the career academy model, school improvement, advanced coursework programming, and the middle grades. Most of my experiences have been in large urban districts and I love working with public educators. I am passionate about providing experiential holistic programming and evidence-based classroom practices to all students.

I grew up in South Lake Tahoe but made Texas my home for fifteen years until I couldn’t take the heat (literally) any longer and made my way back to the West Coast. I am currently based in Portland, Oregon with my husband and two toddlers. We spend much of our time touring the city playgrounds and food carts but always land at Matt’s BBQ cart when we miss the flavors of Texas.

I could nerd out about:

  • Ken Follett novels
  • Fun facts about Lake Tahoe
  • Taylor Swift lyrics
  • Pokémon Go
