Give new teachers the time and professional guidance they need to become expert teachers. Investigate key research, and examine the four types of support—physical, emotional, instructional, and institutional—that are crucial during a teacher’s first year in the classroom. Discover essential strategies for K–12 mentors, coaches, and school leaders to develop an effective mentoring program schoolwide.

  • Review research related to high teacher turnover rates.
  • Consider the important components and new-teacher supports that school leaders should have at the forefront of mentoring programs.
  • Learn how to ascertain which teachers have the skills and experience to be effective mentors and how these mentors can form prosperous relationships with their mentees.
  • Read the author’s personal essays from her first year of teaching, each accompanied by questions that mentors and mentees can use to spark discussion.

I attended the first training on Supporting New Teachers in October and had to wait for the release of this book. It is excellent and exceeded my expectations. I read the entire book in one sitting. It is filled with usable, simple, and powerful ways to support new teachers. I can't wait to implement it into my work with teachers earning their alternative licenses. Thanks Tina Boogren!
