Managing Senior Researcher

Managing Senior Researcher

For Mary, collaboration with educators is the key to developing meaningful projects that provide useful solutions to the issues they face. As managing senior researcher, she leads efforts to shape our work to meet stakeholders’ needs.

Supervising a team of researchers and research associates, Mary leads evaluations of early learning programs and innovative educational interventions funded at the federal, state, and local levels. In addition to early childhood education and school readiness, her areas of expertise include quantitative research methods, educator effectiveness, formative assessment, and data use for quality improvement.

With over 15 years of experience, Mary has managed, designed, and directed multisite research and evaluation studies focused on critical education issues. For example, she has co-directed a systematic evidence review on formative assessment, led a study on the association between state interventions in chronically low-performing schools and student achievement, and headed an evaluation of a district staffing initiative that incentivized highly effective teachers to transfer to low-performing schools. Mary’s research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals.

Mary earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in human development and family studies, with a minor in statistics, from Pennsylvania State University. She is a What Works Clearinghouse-certified reviewer for group design studies.
